Beauty products have a funny way of piling up without you really noticing. A new lipstick here, a backup shampoo there, a skincare sample you swear you will use one day, and suddenly your bathroom cabinets are packed. When you are preparing to move house, that collection can quickly become one more thing you do not want to box up and carry with you.
Decluttering before the move makes packing easier, but it also gives you the chance to start fresh with a beauty collection you actually use and enjoy.
Bring Everything Into One Place
The easiest way to see what you are dealing with is to gather everything together. Pull products out of bathroom cabinets, drawers, makeup bags, bedside tables, and anywhere else they tend to hide.
Include makeup, skincare, haircare, fragrances, nail products, brushes, styling tools, and samples.
Once everything is in front of you, group similar products together. Seeing eight lip balms or four half-used moisturizers lined up makes it much easier to work out what you genuinely need.
Check What Is Still Usable
Next, go through your collection and remove anything that has clearly seen better days.
Dried mascara, separated foundation, old sunscreen, strange-smelling creams, and products that have changed color or texture are unlikely to be worth taking with you.
Check packaging for expiration dates or the small open-jar symbol, which usually shows how long a product should be used after opening.
When in doubt, especially with products used around the eyes, it is usually better to replace them.
Be Realistic About What You Use
Not every product you get rid of has to be expired.
You probably have a few items that are technically fine but never make it into your routine. Maybe the lipstick shade does not suit you, the cleanser leaves your skin feeling dry, or that hair mask has been sitting untouched for a year.
If you consistently choose something else instead, there is little benefit in paying to move it to another house.
Create a “Use Before Moving” Pile
You do not have to throw away every half-empty bottle.
If your moving date is still a few weeks away, set aside products that are close to finished and make an effort to use them up. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturizer, and travel-size products are particularly easy to work through.
The same idea can be applied to your wider move. Reducing what you need to transport can make everything feel more manageable, while organizing bigger logistics early, such as movers, storage, or Baltimore car shipping, can help prevent a last-minute scramble.
Find a New Home for Unwanted Products
If you have unopened products you simply do not want, see whether someone else can use them.
Local shelters, charities, and community groups may accept sealed toiletries and personal care products. You can also offer suitable items to friends or relatives rather than letting them sit unused for another few years.
Just avoid donating anything that is expired, damaged, or unhygienic to share.
Pack What Is Left Properly
Once you have decided what is coming with you, take a little extra care when packing.
Tighten lids, tape down pumps, and place liquids inside resealable bags in case anything leaks. Wrap glass perfume bottles and fragile containers individually, and keep heat-sensitive products away from extreme temperatures where possible.
It is also worth creating one small beauty and toiletry bag for your first night. Pack your toothbrush, cleanser, moisturizer, deodorant, and anything else you use every day.
Moving is already a great excuse for a fresh start. Decluttering your beauty collection beforehand means fewer boxes, less clutter, and a much nicer bathroom cabinet waiting for you at the other end.
